How The World Works

This week was started with provocation for the new unit. Three different artifacts were placed before students and were guided to observe the same. They were further asked to note some key points of their understanding relevant to the artifacts. The students were provided with an opportunity to dance on a piece of music. They repeated this activity three times with different instructions. In the first place, students were asked to take the whole classroom's space to dance. In the second instance, they were guided to dance only on the blue carpet placed in the center of the classroom. When it was the third time, they were provided with a small rug and were guided to dance on that. They were then asked to make connections to the dance and the artifacts. Students came up with excellent responses and were able to make connections with 'Matter' stating they're different elements of the Earth. Most of them mentioned that the unit is related to science. We conducted these activities in the 'Maker Space' room.

In Maths, we continue to practice Multiplication and Division through different games, resources, and strategies. Students solved number problems using different methods like grouping, long division, and column method.
For English language development, we continue to read our chapter book 'Charlotte's Web'. Students focus on sensory imagery while reading. This week, we also focussed on 'Word Choice' inspired by the six traits of writing to do the follow-up activities after reading. Some of the students this week volunteered to read the text aloud to their friends.
During a guided reading session this week, our focus was on 'Voice'. While reading, students were guided to emphasize on their voice and pay attention to reading with intonations and expressions.
Follow-up activities: As we are done with reading five chapters from the book- Charlotte's Web, students came up with some creative ideas. Our focus being word choice, they created word search, crosswords, character sketch, and found new words and their meanings for the 'Web Wall'.
Working in pairs to identify the theme and to create the central idea for the current unit of inquiry.
We made connections with the provocations to predict the theme.
Looking at the theme descriptors to have more clarity.
Students watched a couple of videos on 'Matter and Materials' and their properties. They reflected on the three states of matter-solid, liquid, and gas.
Below are the links for the videos we watched:

Unpacking of the central idea by finding out the meanings of the new words.
In ICT, they are using the app called 'Little Alchemy' to understand the properties of different materials around us. They are experimenting to combine various elements to form a new material.
Isn't that interesting?? Sounds really fun, right???
